Laying and caring for natural stone

Practical notes from our workshop on preparing, laying and finishing the stone you buy from us.

Laying

Our stone is cut to size before it leaves the workshop, so it is ready to lay on walls or floors. No special cement is needed: lay it with ordinary Portland cement and point the joints with a grout coloured to match the stone.

Finishing

You can leave the stone in its natural state, or apply a sealer, liquid waterproofing silicone, resin or wax. A finish deepens the colour, makes the surface easier to clean and adds protection, especially on coral and other porous stones.

Ordering enough

Add an allowance for cutting and breakage, usually around 10%. Our quantity planner does the arithmetic for you.

Common questions

Do I need a special adhesive to lay natural stone?

No. Our stone is laid with ordinary Portland cement, and the joints are filled with a grout coloured to match.

Can you cut stone to a size that isn't listed?

Yes. Everything is cut in our Mombasa workshop, so strips, odd sizes and shapes can be cut to order. Ask us for lead times.

Should I seal coral stone?

It is optional. Coral can be left natural, or finished with a sealer, liquid waterproofing silicone, resin or wax to deepen the colour and make it easier to clean.

Which stone works around a swimming pool?

Galana is dense and handles heat and temperature swings well, which is why we also cut our pool gutters from it. Chipped or bevelled edges add grip and definition.

How much extra should I order?

Allow roughly 10% for cutting and breakage. The quantity planner adds this automatically.
